Oakland 2
This was one of those oops shots.  We were
standing on a steep hill that leads down to a
shallow but wide stream.  The rope and the
ladder can be seen in the background. (they
are used to help you down into the water
because the incline is so steep)  We had
exited the water due to a numerous amount
of snakes and were only half way up the
incline.  I had my camera on and still on the
tripod pointing up to the top of the incline.  It
being so steep and me being so protective of
my camera, I had my had on top of the
camera to keep it from rolling down into the
water. I accidentally hit the shutter.  That is
my daughter's arm with the sun peeking
around it.
The size of these photos do not do them
justice. Lots of cool details get lost when the
photo is so small. This was the inside one of
many abandon "houses".  I have absolutely
no clue how long ago it was built or how long
it had been abandoned.  One of the cool
things about this place was all the light
seeping through the walls and the fireplace.
Another cool thing was the "insulation" used
on one wall was catalog pages.  The pages
looked as though they were from the 30's.
But by far the best part was all the stuff
hanging from the ceiling was wallpaper
draped in a swag fashion over the beams
that are running horizontal in the photo.
A swing in front of a house that looked like it
was about to fall in on one side and had
fallen in on the other.  The swing looked like
it still had some life left.  But I did not get the
"warm fuzzy yard swing" vibe from this one.  It
was actually kinda sad and a bit eerie.
This place is one of my favorite on the
Stevens property.  It was just a single room
place with one door and one window.  The
whole bottom 1/3 of it has collapsed to the
ground with the top 2/3 barely hanging on.
The trees around it have grown up right next
to the walls almost like they are devouring
the little house an inch at a time.
An old bicycle seat just rotting away.  I saw
this in the "yard" by the swing 2 photos
above.  I think this place was used as a
dump.  I just thought the rubbish looked cool.
I bumped up the saturation on the reds,
yellows, and blues to give the garbage a
pretty rainbow effect.
These are all from the same house.  It was about 2000 square feet, 2
stories, a front porch with a trough attached to the house.  The trough was
covered by the front porch (so the horses could be protected from the
weather, I think).  It had a big and a small room upstairs, a back porch
and a door at every room entry.  Wallpaper lined just about every room.
We didn't open or close any doors.  I photographed them just the way they
were.  I absolutely love doorways.
Another pile of garbage!!  This is may favorite photo from that day.  The composition of this mixture of
bricks from the upstairs fireplace, mason jars and some sort of large animal feces was just too
awesome to pass up.  The direction of the shadows (towards the camera) look so awesome!!!
All of the following photos were taken on property belonging to the Stevens family in Oakland, Tennessee.
There are so many really awesome places to explore.  This was my second trip to Oakland to "explore" the
Stevens land.  Billy Stevens and Ashley Malloy were my tour guides.  On my first trip, I was interested in the
landscapes and the old headstones.  This time Ashley wanted me to see the old abandon homes on the
property that she is completely fascinated with exploring herself.  Both trips ended with a dip in a  fast moving
stream that is about 30 feet wide and approximately 2 feet deep.  The water is cold and the place is serene.
However, this trip the water was loaded with snakes.  We decided to let Billy wade in the water with his gun and
the snakes while we watched from several feet away ON THE BANK.  I am dedicating this page to Ashley, Billy,
and Grayson for being such awesome hosts and excellent company.  I can't wait until next time!!  Thanks
guys!!
